Popcorn Tribunal (“we,” “us”) is a movie podcast and review site at popcorntribunal.com. This page explains what information we collect, why, and the choices you have. We keep it short because we collect very little.
What we collect
Free subscriptions. You can subscribe for free. If you do, we store your email address, the types of posts you chose to receive, your preference for reply emails, the name you choose to show (if you add one), and the date you signed up. We use a double opt-in, so nothing starts until you click the confirmation link we send you. A subscription costs nothing and we never ask for payment details.
Signing in. There are no passwords. To sign in, we email you a one-time link that expires after 15 minutes. When you use it, we set a sign-in cookie on your device (see Cookies below) so you stay signed in.
Subscriber-only posts. Some posts are available only to signed-in subscribers. We check your sign-in cookie to decide whether to show them. Search engines are told that these posts are behind a free sign-in.
Comments. Only signed-in subscribers can comment. When you comment, we store your comment, the name you chose to show, your email address (visible only to us), the date, and your IP address for spam control. Your name and comment appear publicly on the post. Comments containing links are held for review before they appear. If you choose, we email you when someone replies to your comment, and you can turn this off in your My Popcorn page.
Reactions. Anyone can react to a post with a thumbs up, heart or smile, without an account. To keep the counts fair, we store your reaction together with a scrambled (hashed) version of your connection details, or your subscriber ID if you are signed in. We cannot read your IP address from the scrambled version. A small cookie on your device remembers which posts you reacted to.
Contact and partnership notes. If you send us a note through the partner form, we receive your name, company, email address and message, and we use them only to reply to you.
Ad and link statistics. When an ad or partner link is shown or clicked, we count it. These are anonymous totals by day. We do not store your IP address or any information that identifies you for this.
Spam protection. To block abuse, we briefly keep a scrambled (hashed) version of your IP address to limit how many times a form can be submitted. It is not used for anything else.
Cookies
- Sign-in cookie (pt_sess). Set only if you sign in. It is a signed token that identifies your subscription and lasts 60 days. It is not readable by scripts on the page.
- Signed-in flag (pt_in). Set at the same time, lasts 60 days. It only tells the page to show “My Popcorn” instead of “Subscribe free.”
- Reaction memory (pt_h). Set when you react to a post, lasts one year. It lists the posts you reacted to so we can show your choice.
- Display setting. If you switch between light and dark mode, your browser remembers it on your own device. This is not sent to us.
- Site editors. The people who run this site also get standard WordPress login cookies when they log in.
You can sign out at any time from My Popcorn, which removes the sign-in cookies. You can also clear cookies in your browser.
Services that handle some of your data
- Email delivery: We use Brevo to send our emails, including confirmation and sign-in links. Brevo processes your email address on our behalf so messages can be delivered.
- Movie information: Film details and posters come from The Movie Database (TMDB). This product uses the TMDB API but is not endorsed or certified by TMDB. Visiting a review does not send your personal information to TMDB.
- Podcast apps and social networks: Links to Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, social profiles and similar services take you to their sites, which have their own privacy policies.
- Website hosting: Our host keeps standard server logs, which can include your IP address and browser type, to keep the site secure and running.
Affiliate links and partners
Some links on our site, including links on the Partners page, are affiliate links. If you buy through them, we may earn a small additional commission at no cost to you. The company you click through to may set its own cookies and has its own privacy policy.
How we use your information
We use it to send the emails you asked for, let you sign in, show comments and reactions, answer your messages, keep the site secure, and understand which content people enjoy. We do not sell your information, and we do not share it with advertisers.
Your choices
- Every email we send includes an unsubscribe link, and you can change which emails you receive, your display name and your reply-email setting at any time in My Popcorn.
- You can ask us to see, correct or delete the information we hold about you by writing to the address below.
- When you unsubscribe, you are signed out and we stop emailing you. If you ask us to delete your data, we remove your email address from our list and, if you ask, your comments too.
Children
This site is for a general audience and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children.
How long we keep things
We keep subscriber information until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete it. Comments stay on the post until you ask us to remove them. Sign-in links expire after 15 minutes. Contact notes are kept as long as needed to reply and for our records. Anonymous ad statistics are kept as totals.
Changes
If we change this policy, we will update the date at the top.
